FSW, CEC, and FST minimum requirements — then calculate CRS

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is Canada’s online application management system for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses it to manage three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST).

Before IRCC ranks you for draws, you must meet the minimum eligibility requirements of at least one of those programs. Only then can you create an Express Entry profile and enter the candidate pool. This free checker helps you see whether you may qualify under FSW, CEC, or FST before you invest time in a full profile or language retakes.

After you confirm eligibility, use our CRS Score Calculator to estimate how competitive you are in federal draws. Many applicants also explore Provincial Nominee Programs for a +600 CRS boost or alternative pathways.

Key immigration terms

  • Express Entry profile — Your online record of age, education, language, work experience, and other factors. You need program eligibility before the profile is complete.
  • FSW (Federal Skilled Worker) — For skilled workers with foreign and/or Canadian experience; uses a 67-point selection grid plus minimum rules.
  • CEC (Canadian Experience Class) — For candidates with at least one year of skilled work in Canada within the last three years.
  • FST (Federal Skilled Trades) — For qualified tradespersons with certification, experience, and often a job offer in a skilled trade.
  • CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) — Points out of 1,200 used to rank candidates after they are in the pool. Calculate CRS.
  • ITA (Invitation to Apply) — Issued to top-ranked candidates in the pool; required before you submit a permanent residence application.
  • CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) — Standard language levels from IELTS, CELPIP, or French tests. Convert scores to CLB.
  • NOC / TEER — Your occupation must usually be skilled (TEER 0–3 for FSW and CEC). Find your NOC code.

How does this Express Entry eligibility checker work?

This tool asks for the main factors IRCC uses to screen candidates at the program gate level: age, education, language (minimum CLB per program), Canadian and foreign skilled work experience, settlement funds for FSW, and skilled-trade criteria for FST. It uses the same eligibility logic as our comprehensive CRS calculator, simplified into a short form with instant results.

You receive:

  • A clear eligible / not eligible result for each of FSW, CEC, and FST
  • Your FSW selection factor score out of 100 (minimum 67 required)
  • Plain-language reasons when a program is not met, so you know what to improve
  • A recommended next step link to the CRS calculator if you may enter the pool

This checker does not replace IRCC’s official “Come to Canada” tool, medical or criminal admissibility reviews, or a full document assessment by a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC).

The three Express Entry programs explained

You only need to qualify for one program to submit an Express Entry profile. Many candidates meet more than one. Below is a summary of each stream.

Eligibility vs. CRS score — what is the difference?

New applicants often confuse program eligibility with CRS ranking. Both matter, but at different stages.

How to improve your eligibility

  • Raise language scores — FSW and CEC need CLB 7 in all four skills. Use the CLB Converter to set a target before retaking IELTS or CELPIP.
  • Gain skilled work experience — Another year of qualified NOC work can help FSW points and may open CEC if experience is in Canada.
  • Confirm your NOC and duties — Experience must match a skilled NOC unit group. Search titles with the NOC Finder.
  • Prepare settlement funds (FSW) — IRCC publishes minimum amounts by family size; exemptions apply with a valid job offer or authorized work in Canada.
  • Consider a provincial nomination — If federal programs are out of reach, a OINP or BC PNP stream may offer another route to permanent residence.

After you are eligible: CRS and provincial strategy

Meeting FSW, CEC, or FST minimums allows you into the pool. It does not guarantee an Invitation to Apply. IRCC regularly holds Express Entry draws; cut-off CRS scores vary (often roughly 450–530+ for all-program draws in recent cycles, with lower cut-offs for some category-based draws).

Strong next steps: calculate your CRS score, compare PNP pathways, and track IRCC draw results. A provincial nomination linked to Express Entry adds 600 CRS points, which usually leads to an ITA quickly.

IRCC makes final decisions based on your complete application, admissibility, medical exams, police certificates, and supporting documents. Program rules and draw cut-offs change without notice. Express Entry Eligibility – Frequently Asked Questions

Anyone considering skilled worker immigration to Canada who wants a quick answer on FSW, CEC, or FST before building a full Express Entry profile. It is especially useful if you are unsure whether you meet minimum language, work, or funds requirements.
No. You need to qualify for at least one program to submit an Express Entry profile. If you qualify for multiple programs, IRCC will assess your application under the streams that match your background.
Not necessarily. Eligibility allows you to enter the Express Entry pool. Your CRS score and the cut-off score for each federal draw determine whether you are invited to apply for permanent residence. Calculate your CRS score after confirming eligibility.
FSW uses a 100-point selection factor system based on age, education, language, work experience, arranged employment, and adaptability. You need at least 67 points, plus you must meet minimum language (CLB 7), education, work experience, and settlement funds rules.
Most CEC applicants have recent skilled work experience in Canada, often while on a valid work permit. The core rule is at least one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work in Canada within the three years before you apply, with qualifying language test results.
This page focuses on minimum program eligibility (FSW, CEC, FST gates) with a short form. The CRS calculator estimates your Comprehensive Ranking System score out of 1,200 for Express Entry draws and also shows FSW/CEC/FST badges as you complete a detailed profile. Use eligibility first, then CRS for ranking strategy.
In most cases, yes — you need a valid full-time job offer in a skilled trade for at least one year, or a certificate of qualification in a trade issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority. Language requirements are lower than FSW and CEC (CLB 5 for speaking/listening, CLB 4 for reading/writing).
No. It is an unofficial educational tool. For the official assessment, use IRCC’s Come to Canada tool on canada.ca or consult a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) or immigration lawyer.
