FSW, CEC, and FST minimum requirements — then calculate CRS
Express Entry is Canada’s online application management system for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses it to manage three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST).
Before IRCC ranks you for draws, you must meet the minimum eligibility requirements of at least one of those programs. Only then can you create an Express Entry profile and enter the candidate pool. This free checker helps you see whether you may qualify under FSW, CEC, or FST before you invest time in a full profile or language retakes.
After you confirm eligibility, use our CRS Score Calculator to estimate how competitive you are in federal draws. Many applicants also explore Provincial Nominee Programs for a +600 CRS boost or alternative pathways.
This tool asks for the main factors IRCC uses to screen candidates at the program gate level: age, education, language (minimum CLB per program), Canadian and foreign skilled work experience, settlement funds for FSW, and skilled-trade criteria for FST. It uses the same eligibility logic as our comprehensive CRS calculator, simplified into a short form with instant results.
You receive:
This checker does not replace IRCC’s official “Come to Canada” tool, medical or criminal admissibility reviews, or a full document assessment by a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC).
You only need to qualify for one program to submit an Express Entry profile. Many candidates meet more than one. Below is a summary of each stream.
| Program | Who it is for | Typical profile |
|---|---|---|
| FSW | Skilled workers abroad or in Canada without recent Canadian experience | Degree, CLB 7+, 1+ years skilled work, settlement funds, 67+ on selection grid |
| CEC | Workers with recent skilled experience in Canada | 1+ year skilled Canadian work in last 3 years, CLB 7+ (TEER 0–3) |
| FST | Certified tradespersons | Trade certificate, 2+ years trade experience, job offer or cert, CLB 5/4 language |
| Requirement | FSW | CEC | FST |
|---|---|---|---|
| Work experience | 1 year continuous skilled (NOC TEER 0–3) in last 10 years | 1 year skilled in Canada in last 3 years | 2 years in skilled trade in last 5 years |
| Language | CLB 7 all skills (English or French) | CLB 7 all skills | CLB 5 speaking/listening; CLB 4 reading/writing |
| Education | Secondary school or higher | Not a separate minimum (skills/experience focus) | Not same grid as FSW; trade qualification matters |
| Selection score | 67/100 on FSW grid | N/A (program criteria only) | N/A (trade criteria) |
| Settlement funds | Usually required (unless exempt) | Not required | Not required |
| Job offer | Not required | Not required | Often required (or certificate in regulated trade) |
New applicants often confuse program eligibility with CRS ranking. Both matter, but at different stages.
| Eligibility checker (this page) | CRS calculator | |
|---|---|---|
| Question answered | Can I enter the Express Entry pool under FSW, CEC, or FST? | How many CRS points do I have for federal draws? |
| Output | Eligible / not eligible per program + gaps to fix | CRS score out of 1,200 + live FSW/CEC/FST badges as you fill sections |
| When to use | First — before creating your IRCC profile | After eligibility — to plan draws and improvements |
| Form length | Short (about 5 minutes) | Detailed (full profile, spouse, job offer, etc.) |
Our CRS calculator also shows FSW, CEC, and FST status in section headers as you complete the form. Use this page when you want a quick answer without the full CRS wizard or email step.
Meeting FSW, CEC, or FST minimums allows you into the pool. It does not guarantee an Invitation to Apply. IRCC regularly holds Express Entry draws; cut-off CRS scores vary (often roughly 450–530+ for all-program draws in recent cycles, with lower cut-offs for some category-based draws).
Strong next steps: calculate your CRS score, compare PNP pathways, and track IRCC draw results. A provincial nomination linked to Express Entry adds 600 CRS points, which usually leads to an ITA quickly.
Disclaimer: This Express Entry eligibility checker provides an unofficial estimate for informational purposes only. IRCC makes final decisions based on your complete application, admissibility, medical exams, police certificates, and supporting documents. Program rules and draw cut-offs change without notice. Always confirm requirements on IRCC Express Entry or with a qualified immigration professional.
Select your age and highest education level. These affect FSW selection points and general skilled-worker screening.
Enter your lowest CLB across reading, writing, listening, and speaking for English (and French if applicable). Use our CLB tool if you only have IELTS or CELPIP band scores.
Include years of skilled work in Canada and abroad. For CEC, confirm at least one year of skilled Canadian work within the last three years.
