When preparing for Express Entry, you need to take an approved English language test. Canada accepts two tests for Express Entry: IELTS General Training and CELPIP-General. Both are converted to the same Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) scale, but many test-takers find one easier than the other.

IELTS General Training

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world’s most widely accepted English language test with over 3.5 million test-takers annually. For Express Entry, you must take the General Training version (not Academic).

  • Format: Paper-based or computer-based
  • Sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking
  • Speaking: Face-to-face interview with an examiner
  • Validity: 2 years for immigration purposes
  • Available: Worldwide, very widely available

CELPIP-General

CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) is a Canadian-developed test administered by Paragon Testing Enterprises, a subsidiary of UBC.

  • Format: Fully computer-based
  • Sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking
  • Speaking: Computer-based (speak into a microphone)
  • Validity: 2 years for immigration purposes
  • Available: Primarily in Canada and select international centres

CLB Score Comparison

CLB Level IELTS (each section) CELPIP (each section)
CLB 10 8.0 10
CLB 9 7.0 9
CLB 8 6.5 8
CLB 7 6.0 7
CLB 6 5.5 6
CLB 5 5.0 5

Which Test Should You Choose?

Choose IELTS if:

  • You are outside Canada and have easy access to an IELTS test centre
  • You prefer a face-to-face speaking interview
  • You want the option to use the same result for other visa applications

Choose CELPIP if:

  • You are in Canada and find computer-based tests less stressful
  • You prefer not to have a face-to-face speaking test
  • You want fast results (results available within 8 business days)

Impact on CRS Score

Achieving CLB 9 vs CLB 8 in all four sections can add 30–50 points to your CRS score. Even a half-band improvement in IELTS (e.g., from 6.5 to 7.0 in one section) can move you from CLB 8 to CLB 9 and add significant points.
