How to Improve Your CRS Score in 2026: 10 Proven Strategies

Your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score is the single most important number in your Express Entry journey. The higher your score, the more likely you are to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence.

With minimum scores for recent draws hovering between 480 and 510, many candidates need a strategic approach to reach a competitive score. Here are 10 proven strategies.

1. Retake Your Language Test

Language scores are one of the most impactful factors in your CRS. Moving from CLB 8 to CLB 9 in English can add up to 50–80 points. If you scored below CLB 9 on any section, consider retaking IELTS or CELPIP. Many candidates see significant improvement on their second attempt with targeted preparation.

2. Get a Canadian Job Offer

A valid job offer from a Canadian employer can add 50 to 200 points to your CRS score, depending on the NOC TEER category. An offer in a TEER 0 or 1 occupation (managers, professionals) adds 200 points; TEER 2, 3, 4, or 5 roles add 50 points. Note that the offer must generally be supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or fall under LMIA-exempt categories.

3. Apply for a Provincial Nomination

This is the most powerful strategy. A provincial nomination through an Express Entry-linked PNP stream adds exactly 600 CRS points, virtually guaranteeing an ITA. Research the PNP programs in Ontario (OINP), British Columbia (BC PNP), Alberta (AINP), and others to find the stream you qualify for.

4. Complete a Canadian Education Credential

Having a Canadian degree, diploma, or certificate adds up to 30 points. If you or your spouse are already in Canada, completing even a one- or two-year diploma can meaningfully boost your score — and also improves your employability.

5. Add Canadian Work Experience

Each year of skilled Canadian work experience adds up to 80 core points and enables additional skill transferability points. If you are already in Canada on a work permit, your Canadian experience is building up every year.

6. Take the French Language Test

Demonstrating strong French language skills (CLB 7+) earns you additional points and also makes you eligible for French-specific Express Entry draws, which frequently have much lower minimum CRS scores (sometimes under 430).

7. Transfer Spouse’s Qualifications

If your spouse accompanies you, their education, language scores, and Canadian work experience all contribute to your CRS score. Investing in improving your spouse’s language scores can add meaningful points to the combined score.

8. Have a Sibling in Canada

If you have a brother or sister who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you receive an additional 15 CRS points. This is a simple bonus if it applies to you — make sure to claim it in your profile.

9. Target Category-Based Draws

Since 2023, IRCC has been holding category-based draws targeting specific occupations (healthcare, STEM, trades, transport, agriculture) and French speakers. These draws often have lower minimum scores. Make sure your NOC code accurately reflects your occupation to be included in relevant draws.

10. Stay Patient and Keep Your Profile Updated

Express Entry is a competitive process. Keep your profile accurate and up-to-date — especially your language test scores, which expire after two years. Many candidates receive ITAs after waiting 12–18 months as the pool dynamics change.

What Is a Good CRS Score in 2026?

Based on recent draws, a score above 490 gives you a good chance of receiving an ITA in an all-programs draw. However, with category-based draws, candidates in targeted occupations have received ITAs with scores as low as 430. Use our CRS Score Calculator to find out where you stand.
